Food Stamp (SNAP)

a. Eligibility Requirements
SNAP provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families.
Eligibility is based on the following criteria:
  • Income: Household income must fall below a certain threshold. This threshold varies depending on the number of people in the household.
    • $2,413/month (Individual), $3,261/month (Couple)
  • Assets: There are limits on assets, such as savings and checking accounts.
    • $4,000 or less (Individual), $6,000 or less (Couple)
  • $4,500 or less (Age 60 or older)
  • Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents (residing for 5 years) are eligible to apply.

b. Required Documents
  • Proof of Identity (e.g., ID card, Driver's License, Social Security Card, PR Card)
  • Proof of Income (e.g., Pay stubs, Unemployment benefits, Social Security Benefits)
  • Proof of Residency (e.g., Lease agreement, Utility bills)
  • Proof of Household Composition (e.g., Birth certificates, Social Security Cards)
  • Proof of Expenses (e.g., Childcare costs, Medical expenses, etc.)

c. How to Apply
  • Online: https://mynjhelps.gov/home
    • Apply directly online via the NJ SNAP website.
    • You can check your eligibility, submit an application, and track your application status here.
  • In Person: You may apply in person at the Bergen County Board of Social Services.

d. Reporting Changes
If there are any changes to your income or household situation after you have applied, you must report these changes to the NJ SNAP program; failure to do so may result in a reduction or cancellation of your benefits.
